Research Highlights

  • Publications: 55 peer-reviewed journal articles, 11 with student/postdoc advisees as primary author. 135 technical reports. H index: 21 (Web of Science), 28 (Google Scholar); Total citations: 1,478 (Web of Science), 2,643 (Google Scholar).

  • 33 invited presentations at universities, research institutes, and professional organizations. 113 conference presentations by my research group.

  • $4.02M in research funding as principal investigator, with an additional $18.5M as co-PI and senior personnel, all while at UMass Dartmouth. In total, these 48 funded projects brought $7.5M to UMass Dartmouth, with $4.94M to my lab. 

  • Extra-mural funding sources include NOAA, NSF, The Nature Conservancy, Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, New England Fishery Management Council, Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council, Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, and the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES).

Teaching and Advising Highlights

  • Major professor for sixteen graduate students at UMass Dartmouth (7 PhD, 9 MS). Nine students have graduated (3 PhD, 6 MS). Four of my PhD students have been recipients of the NOAA Fisheries-Sea Grant Population and Ecosystem Dynamics Fellowship.

  • Supervisor for 7 postdoctoral researchers, 3 post-master’s technical and research associates, 6 undergraduate researchers, 2 high school interns, and an additional 3 lab technicians.

  • Served on the graduate thesis committee for an additional 31 graduate students at UMass Dartmouth and other universities. Served as the external examiner for 2 PhD students in Canada.

  • Developed, redesigned, and taught 6 graduate courses at UMass Dartmouth:

    • Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management

    • Advanced Population Modeling

    • Science Communication for Research Scientists

    • Biological Statistics II

    • Models for Marine Ecosystem-Based Management

    • Bayesian statistics and hierarchical modeling for ecology

  • Instructor for short courses and workshops in quantitative fisheries methods, R programming, Management Strategy Evaluation, and statistical computing (ADMB & TMB) at UMass Dartmouth and for the Cooperative Institute for North Atlantic Region, ICES, and Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission.
